I worked with George at the Eagle Picher Miami Research Laboratories in the early 1970s and knew him quite well. Also visited with him years later when I was in Miami. Please accept my heartfelt condolences on his passing. Jim Reising
The below remembrance is from Richard Hatfield, brother-in law to George Nixon Webb.
I wanted to share a few words about George who I have known for a very long time – not as long as his brother Carl Frank Webb - but pretty close.
George was an extremely honest person, quiet, steady and a fantastic mentor to all during his lifetime.
His parents greatly influenced him, as they had lived through the depression. His father worked for Sinclair delivering gas to farmers and his mother taught school. At that time women could only be a nurse or a teacher. Think of all the students she influenced throughout her life to be good decent individuals including her sons George and Carl Frank.
George walked 1.5 miles to date my sister, Frances Hatfield. I was young and harassed them by looking at them through the blinds. They ignored me, which was good! Lonnie Sutton and I were candlelighters at their wedding and Dr. Michael Haugh, our cousin, sang the Lord’s Prayer.
They lived together for over 71 years in different cities and homes. While stationed in Germany, they had their first daughter, Karen Sue in 1957. George and Frances stayed in contact with their friends in Germany throughout their lives.
When they came back to the United States he worked as an engineer. Linda was born in Natchez, Mississippi in 1959. In 1960 George went to work for Eagle Picher in Miami, Oklahoma and retired there in 1995.
Although they traveled to many countries during their lifetime, Miami has always been home. They worked for the Ottawa County Historical Society, and participated along with other members of the community to restore the Coleman Theatre back to its original condition from 1929. Miami is a very progressive city with fantastic relationships including NEO A&M. George has been a silent supporter as they believed in the importance of educating our youth.
Karen, Linda and Bill O’Brien have supported them throughout their lives and especially during the last few years. Bill drove them to many doctor appointments in Joplin, Missouri, and also assisted them with many projects, large and small, around the house.
George has been a great mentor to me and many others during his lifetime!

I am thinking of Mr. Webb and of all of you - Mrs. Webb, Karen and Linda - and sending prayers for peace. I remember Mr. Webb providing such reliable support to the Girl Scout troops, always with a smile and calm patience. Our afternoon snacks at Mr. Webb’s mother’s home before our weekly cadet meetings, our many camping and river trips are some of my favorite memories. Grateful for both Mr. and Mrs. Webb for their presence in my early life and for their deep and abiding service to our community.
I started working at Miami Research in1969 as a Junior Engineer and George became my mentor on technical and personal issues for years. He provided the steady hand to a young guy and was unflappable when my many experiments went haywire. He will be missed in the Miami community. - Dennis Thomas
