Mrs. Ruth Ann Heyburn's Obituary
Mrs. Ruth Ann (Leon) Heyburn of Miami, Oklahoma died at 10:17 a.m. on December 28, 2021, at her daughter’s home in Wimberley, Texas. She was 96.
Mrs. Heyburn was born October 10, 1925, in Pittsburg, Kansas, to Forrest Baxter Leon and Ruth Francis Hatton Leon. She was raised in Pittsburg and graduated from Saint Mary’s Catholic High School in 1943. She graduated from Loretto Heights in Denver, Colorado in 1944. She then moved to Los Angeles, California to enroll at the Los Angeles Art Center in 1945. She returned to Pittsburg and graduated from Pittsburg State in 1948. She then returned to Denver and received a master’s in Physical Education in 1949 from University of Colorado, Denver. She used that degree to teach Physical Education in Caney, Kansas, Wheat Ridge, Colorado, and a return to her alma mater Loretto Heights, where she coached the women’s basketball team. Her proudest moment from this time was when Loretto Heights beat her other alma mater, University of Colorado, Denver. She was a long-time member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was a member of the Miami Golf & Country Club where she was the Women’s Club Champion in 1970, 1971 and 1983. She was the runner-up to the Women’s Championship numerous times. She was the Women’s Driving Champion in 1965, and 1967. She also enjoyed playing Tennis. She was also a member of the Friday Study Club for many years as well as a bridge group. She also enjoyed cooking, which she was very good at, and her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Forrest, and Ruth Hatton Leon, two brothers, Max, and Pat Leon, one sister, Virginia Leon, and her late husband Mr. Dan Heyburn.
She is survived by her four sons, Mark Heyburn, James Heyburn and his wife Carrie, and John Heyburn, all of Miami. Dan Heyburn and his wife Lee of Leesburg, Virginia. Two daughters, Ann Guilford of Wimberley, Texas and Mary Evans and her husband Stacy of Tulsa, Oklahoma, as well as fifteen grandchildren who she adored.
A Rosary will be said at 6:00PM, Sunday, January 2, 2022 followed by visitation at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Monday, January 3, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miami with Father Sam Perez officiating. Burial will follow at Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery in Miami. Services are under the care of Brown-Winters Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Miami.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
Pallbearers will be her six grandsons.
