Richard L. Holcom's Obituary
Richard Lee Holcom passed away Friday, Feb. 12, 2010 at his home in Miami. He was 88.
Mr. Holcom was born December 24, 1921 in Girard, Kansas to Albert and Lottie (Tipton) Holcom.
Richard graduated from Miami High School in 1940. He was a life long outdoorsman. He loved to golf and hunt and had his own commercial fishing crew in Oklahoma, Texas and S.D. He moved his family to S.D. in 1959 and lived there for 37 years. He also worked for the S.D. Dept. of Game Fish and Parks and the U.S. fish & wildlife. He will be remembered for his famous fish fries to the different communities and organizations.
He served his country in 1943-1945 during World War II under General Patton and was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Elks and a Boy Scout leader.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, sister; Alberta (Holcom) Nowell, and baby son; Richard.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine (Chambers) Holcom, of the home; one daughter, Sally Ann Reimer and husband Ronnie of Pukwana, S.D.; one son, David Holcom of Sioux Falls, S.D., a sister, Dorothy Fritzel, Lawrence, Ks; five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church in Miami, Oklahoma. Dr. Helen Hutchison will officiate. Burial will be in GAR Cemetery, Miami.
