The legend of Richard Case.
I was transferred to Tulsa back in the ‘80’s and into the same work environment as Richard. Tuned out Richard was already the big man on campus and was close friends with the guys I worked with. We were in our 30’s and mostly single with lots of energy back then. Turns out we all liked water sports and Grand Lake was “where it’s at” for horsing around on the water. We’d spend summers there and before you knew it, we all had our own boats and then more boats and then jet-skis and towables and death tubes and water skis, we were busting at the seams so we moved out of the marina and bought some property on the water. He and I have been living on the lake ever since and been friends for 40 years.
Richard was the most fun loving, generous and cleaver person I ever knew. He was like Leonardo da Vinci to me, he was a fantastic artist he could beautifully sketch up complicated shapes from memory and his wood working will be collectable someday. He was an inventor, he routinely devised solutions that would stump an engineer, he was a philosopher, he had held many a logical thesis on the meaning of life, he was a first class sportsman who by the time I met him had done it all and was ready for more. New sports and games and equipment come to market all the time. He was always ready to try the latest thing, any sport, any hunt, any adventure at any time. (how about the time he rode his motorcycle to Barrow Alaska and our water skiing excursions in January).
There was nothing more tragic than his accident 13 years ago but he never really complained and made the best of the bad hand he was dealt. In the end he came through as always and managed to provide for his family before he left this earth and left me and my wife Carol with so many memories, we will miss him so much.
