2023 was the year that the Jacksonville High School class of 1966 in IL
turned 75. Among those who had fewer years ( only 69) Larry is well-remembered. Looking back on the years that Larry and his twin brother, Gary attended JHS, we smile remembering those sincere, gentle smiles and humble gestures. The guys with whom Larry competed in sports called him Chief, all of his classmates, I believe, called him friend. Rest in Peace
Chief and I were co-captains of the high school football team in Jacksonville, IL our senior year. He was a great player and, of course, went ahead to play at EIU. I have many great memories of him beginning in 7th grade when i first met him. I'm sorry I lost track of him after high school but always kept track of his news., Rest in peace, my friend. "Chief" (Larry) and I were were football teammates at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois during the 1967 and 1968 seasons. To all of us he was "Chief" and he loved the nickname. He was an excellent football player coming out of Jacksonville, IL high school and continued that excellence in college. We played a tough schedule and Chief was our starting running back, punter, and punt returner. He was voted by his teammates as MVP his sophomore season ('67), runner-up in '68, and was poised to have a great senior season in '69 but was sidelined early with what turned out to be a career-ending knee injury. It was indeed a disappointing end to a sterling college football career. I haven't seen or spoken to Chief in nearly 50 years, but I vividly remember #43 bursting thru the line, picking up the tough yardage, and giving 100% every play, every game. He was an inspiration to all of his teammates and we loved him for his dedication and selfless play. As great a player and teammate that Chief was, he was a better man, even as a 19 and 20 year old. He was kind, humble, funny, and loyal. You could always count on him. Many of the tributes on this memory wall have said the same things about him 30 and 40 years later. I'm not one bit surprised. Seems like it was just yesterday that Larry, Rex Summers, me, and several other teenagers were all up to no good, crammed together in my 57 Ford, riding together, having super fun, and had all the time in the world. I still remember what Larry said when he got in the Ford, "Hey Ronnie", (in that way of talking that always got my attention), you know what I really like about this car. Now I remember I fluffed up my chest from behind the steering wheel, cocked my right ear over to my right (as I did not want to miss a word of what I surely thought he would help me brag about my 4 speed fast shiftier or the sound of my 3 deuce carburetor when they kicked in together), no Larry says, "you have a full tank of gas"!!! Talk about taking the air out me, but to this day I still smile when I remember getting into the Ford that day, and Larry saying that Oh Larry, we spent many a day together during that time period before we went our separate ways. You made too many friends to be forgotten, as I am living proof of that. Until we meet again.

Larry was an awesome person to work with. He shared many stories of his heritage with me and I loved to see his State Christmas ornament collection. I remember when he brought the tribe up here to bless our new office! This will forever stay in my memory. He was an all around great guy. Praying for you his family.
