Ginger Kay Sommer's Obituary
Ginger K. Sommer, 67, of Miami died at 6:12 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at Freeman Health System in Joplin, MO after a short illness.
Ginger was born September 3, 1944 in Guthrie Center, Iowa to Merle and Irene (Bailey) Slater. After graduating from Rock Valley (Iowa) High School in 1963 Ginger joined the U. S. Army and served her country as a WAC until 1967. On July 20, 1968 she married Douglas Sommer at Shell Rock, Iowa.
The family moved to Miami in August 1975. Ginger worked as a laborer on the line for Eagle Picher. Ginger enjoyed bowling, crocheting, knitting and she loved to read. She could spend hours playing Farmville on Facebook.
Ginger was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Jerry, and one sister Sandy.
Survivors include her husband, Doug Sommer of Miami; two daughters, Shawn Lynch and her husband Jim of Jay, OK and Shelly Sommer of Joplin, MO; one brother, Ken Slater of Cherokee, Iowa; three grandsons; and one great-grandson.
A memorial service will be held for Ginger at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church in Miami with Dr. Helen Hutchinson officiating.
The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.
