Delmer Leroy Burris' Obituary
Delmer Leroy Burris, 88, a resident of Miami, Oklahoma went to be with his lord on Monday, April 3, 2023. Delmer was born in Bernice, Oklahoma on November 11, 1934 to Melvin and Ruby “Mathews” Burris. While attending Commerce High School, Delmer was selected for All-State in football. After graduating from Commerce High School, Delmer was proud to have the opportunity to serve his country in the United States Army. Delmer would marry the love of his life Janice “Woolridge” Burris on December 31, 1954. Together they would have one daughter, Terra. After serving in the Army, Delmer found his true calling in Law Enforcement. Delmer started his law enforcement career at the City of Miami, Oklahoma Police Department. He would work for Miami Police Department from 1961 until 1981. After retiring from Miami Police Department, Delmer accepted a position with the Grand River Dam Authority Police as the Chief from 1981 until 1999. After retiring from the Grand River Dam Authority Police, Delmer chose to continue working in law enforcement for the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office until 2017. When Delmer was not working, you could catch him fishing or hunting. Delmer was also a lifelong fan of the University of Oklahoma Sooners. Most of all, Delmer loved his lord and savior Jesus Christ. He was proud to be a Deacon of his church until he stepped down in 2018. He will always be remembered as a caring person who loved his family very much.
Preceding Delmer in passing are his parents, Melvin and Ruby Burris, and his sisters, Mary Boutot and Phylis Smith.
Those left to share the memory of Mr. Burris, is his wife, Janice Burris, of the home, daughter, Terra Leader and her husband David, of Miami. Grandchildren include, Whitney Rush and her husband Ricky, of Miami, Sadie Harrison and her husband, Jeremiah, of Miami, and Jordan Leader and his wife Mellissa, of Tulsa. Great-Grandchildren include Javen, Baylen, Stratton, Madden, Everly, Barrett, and Melia.
Visitation has been scheduled for 1:00 P.M., Monday, April 10, 2023, at First Baptist Church in Miami, Oklahoma. Funeral Services will follow at 2:00 P.M. Interment will follow at the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery in Miami under the care of Brown-Winters Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
