He was a great friend and a wonderful person. As a member of the Class of 1972, he was one year ahead of me in the Class of 1973. I remember he would always eat honey before his track meets. He also had a unique way of starting sprint races—he never used starting blocks. Instead, he stood at the starting line and had perfected the art of leaning forward just before the starter’s pistol fired, giving him what seemed like a one-step advantage as the race began.
More than his athletic ability, I will always remember him as a kind, dignified man who treated everyone with respect. He made a lasting impression on those who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.
