Bettigene S Hume's Obituary
Bettigene Slover Hume, 82, a resident of Miami passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at her home. Bettiegene was born on March 27, 1931, in Kingsville, Texas to Melvin P. and Fannie Z. (Williams) Slover. On July 19, 1951 she married Donald Clayton Hume in Alpine, Texas. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal Music. She and Don came to the Miami area in 1965. Bettigene’s first love was serving the Lord, then serving her husband and children. She worked as Director of Music for their church while living in California, after moving to Miami, Mrs. Hume helped Don build his business, all the while working faithfully at First Baptist Church in many areas such as Junior High Sunday School, High School Acteens and Women’s Missionary Union. She and a close friend, Vera Kissee, started a mission house where they met weekly for over 35 years teaching women about the Lord. Bettigene was preceded in passing by her parents, Melvin and Fannie Slover, a brother and sister- in-law, Melvin “Bud” and Mary Slover and a granddaughter, Melissa Kathleen Winnie.
Survivors include her husband of sixty-two years, Donald Hume, of the home, her daughters, Joanna Winnie of Miami, and Kathy Smith and her husband Kevin of Bartlesville, six grandchildren: Jason Winnie, Michael Winnie, Katy French, Emily Weiblen, Erik Smith and Laura Smith, along with four great grandchildren, Harper Winnie, Isaac Winnie, Isabelle Winnie and Clara Winnie.
Visitation will be 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Brown-Winters Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Miami.
Celebration of life services will be 10:00 AM on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at the First Baptist Church with Mr. Mark Rasor officiating. Interment will follow in the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery under the care of the Brown-Winters Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to Feed the Children, PO Box 36, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73101.
