LeRoy Monroe Johnson

LeRoy M. (Sparky) Johnson died October 30th, 2025, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. He was 81 years old. LeRoy was a lifelong resident of Afton, OK. He was born May 31, 1944, to Leonard and Pauline (Moore) Johnson. He was a graduate of Afton High School in the class of 1962. While in high school, LeRoy was heavily involved in the FFA. He received the honor of Northeast Star Farmer in 1962 and went on to receive his American Farmer Degree in 1963. He served as a state FFA officer as the Northeast District Vice President for the 1962-1963 term. After graduating from high school, LeRoy attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, where he met the love of his life, Connie Nitz, whom he went on to spend the next 61 years with. Upon graduating from NEO, he went on to pursue a degree in Agronomy from Oklahoma State University. After graduating from OSU, he returned home to Afton, where he became a third-generation farmer, farming alongside his dad and brother. LeRoy and Connie moved to their current home in May of 1966. That same year, they gave birth to their first son, Wade, who passed away a year later in 1967 due to illness. Two years later, in 1968, they gave birth to Scott and, later, Justin in 1970. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Afton and a member of the Oklahoma Crop Improvement Board. Through the years, LeRoy was a strong supporter of many local organizations, including Afton FFA, Afton Athletics, and various local causes, including the Afton Chamber of Commerce. He farmed with his two sons and grandsons until his death. LeRoy is preceded in death by his son, Wade Monroe Johnson, and both parents, Leonard (Jiggs) and Pauline Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Connie, two sons, Scott and wife Kim, Justin and wife April; five grandchildren, Dillon and wife, Katelyn Johnson, Austin Johnson, Tuff Johnson, Delani Johnson, and Jaydon Blythe; brother Wayne and wife Elsa, all of Afton, and several nieces and nephews. Visitation for LeRoy will be 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at First Baptist Church in Afton, Oklahoma. Services will be 10:00 AM, Wednesday, November 5, 2025, also at First Baptist Church with Reverend Leroy Orr and Reverend Todd Weineke officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery under the care of Brown-Winters Funeral Home in Afton, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Afton.
