Norma Jean Shamblin

Norma Jean Shamblin passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Eastwood Manor in Commerce, OK. She was 88 years old. Norma was born on August 25, 1925 to George L. Barnes and Mabel May McAdams in El Reno, OK. She married Bob Shamblin on October 12,1951, he preceded her in death. Norma is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters; June Mae Simmons and Erma Lee Baker and a brother; Vernie Barnes. Her survivors include a sister-in-law; Margie Barnes of Miami, OK., a niece; Sherry Kirtley of Commerce, OK and a nephew; Terry Jo Jones of Joplin, MO. Jean worked as a Certified Nurse Aid most of her adult life in both clinical and home settings and continued working as a companion for the elderly until into her early eighties. She loved her "clients", as she called them, and many became life long friends. Trudy once asked her if she realized that she was older than most of her clients. Her only reply was a very startled look on Jean's face as though such a thought had never crossed her mind. Jean had no children of her own but instead loved everyone else's. Ashton and Hannah Myers had a special corner in Jean's heart. She could be found at Parents Night Out most Friday nights or at VBS helping entertain the children. She joined Eastern Star on Dec. 14, 1956. She joined the military branch of the Rebeccas on June 6, 1972 and both the Ladies Encampment Auxiliary and the Ladies Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant in 1979. She remained an active member until her death. She was a past President of Ladies Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant, past Chief Matriarch of Oklahoma chapter, past Noble Grand of Rebecca Miami Lodge 25 and obtained the decoration of Chivalry along with several other recognitions. She had been a member of Southeast Baptist since Oct. 2, 1993 and was a valued partner in the Van Ministry. She was active in WMU and she loved her church family and was loved greatly in return. She could tease with the best of them and was rarely without a quick comeback . She was also quick to pray for all who asked. No one got by Jean without a hug if she could help it. She set all of us an example because she believed life was to be enjoyed and her age was "just a number to be disregarded". She will be greatly missed but we look forward to joining her at our Father's house for the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.
