Lavenia Nixon Holcomb

Lavenia (Nixon) Holcomb of Miami, Ok, died September 14, 2010, at her home after a short illness. She had just celebrated her ninetieth birthday. Mrs. Holcomb was born Sept. 9, 1920, near Canton, Oklahoma, to Albert and Myrtle (England) Nixon. She married Arthur Holcomb on Sept. 26, 1937 in Miami. He preceded her in death on July 14, 1992, after nearly fifty-five years of marriage. Also preceding her in death were her parents, her infant twin daughters, her sister Dorothy Nixon and infant sister Imogene; her brothers and their wives, Dillard Nixon, George Nixon ansd his wife Lorene; Sisters-in-law Eleanor and Sue Nixon all of Miami; and Roy Nixon and wife Irla of Canon City, CO, brother-in-law Verbal Holcomb, teen step-grandsons Thomas and Charles Bacon of CA, and sister-in-law Euna Hamilton of Grove. She is survived by her two brothers, Willard Nixon of Miami, and Lloyd Nixon and wife Elfriede of Lugoff, SC; her five children, Betty Jane Edwards, Marcia McManigal and husband, David, Charlotte Clark, Ted Holcomb and wife Florence, all of Miami, Don Holcomb of Bernice; her sister-in-law, Betty Holcomb of San Bernardino, CA; and brother-in-law Lester Holcomb and wife Cozine of Grove. She is also survived by her twelve grandchildren and their spouses, Frances Smith of Grove, Connie and Dale Rideout of CO, Susan and Edward Kleinke of NY, Paul and Shannon McManigal of SC, Leslie and David Harris, Lisa and Edward Owens, Theresa Simpson of CA, Holly Kulhanek of WA, Stacey Gagnon of ME, Sean Clark of Baxter Springs, Stephen Smith and Michael McManigal of Miami and many nieces and nephews. She has twenty-seven great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was of the Baptist faith and was a Sunday School superintendent while living in Tucson, AZ, where the family moved in 1952. They moved to San Bernardino, CA, in 1964, then returned to Grove, OK, in 1979 to retire by the lake. Mrs. Holcomb returned to Miami in 2000. Mrs. Holcomb was very interested in meteorology and genealogy. Her genealogy research took her to Salt Lake City where she traced her family tree to the Mayflower and beyond. Her faith was very strong and she was often found reading her well-thumbed Bible. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at the Funeral Home Chapel and the visiting hour will be Friday September 17, 2010 from 7-8 PM at Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home of Miami. Pallbearers will be Sean Clark, Christian Hausermann, Don Holcomb, Ted Holcomb, Edward Kleinke and Michael McManigal. Interment will be at the Olympus Cemetery in Grove.
